Quest for the Quietest Hair Dryer -5 Best Bets

When I was young,  I never thought about finding the quietest hair dryer. Mostly, I was concerned about how effective be on my hair. Would it blow so hard that my hair would tangle? Would it blow too weekly to get the job done quickly? Too hot? No cool blast? It never really occurred to me that I should be looking for the quietest hair dryer too. Frankly, I can actually recall that my ears would ring for a while after using some of my hair dyers. When my mother got a hearing aid wondered what she might have done to damage her hearing. It's not like she was running out to heavy metal concerts or even blasting music into headphones. Then I read this article in the New York Times a few years ago about the causes of hearing loss, I never made the connection between hearing loss and high-pitched, loud hair dryers. Yikes! I didn't want to take any further chances with my hearing or my kids' hearing. So the quest for the quietest hair dryer began. Here are the results from my quest.

Like Goldie Locks, although I'm looking for the quietest hair dryer I still want it to do all the great things I need a hair dryer to do. I looked at one that seemed to fit the bill but when I opened the box realized it only had two heat settings. When I tried it the heat settings seemed they seemed to be better called: Smok'n and On Fire.

BaBylissPRO Nano Titanium Dryer

The BaBliss is a standout hair dryer. It is nice and light at 1.8 lbs, reasonably quiet and offers three heat settings and two different speed settings along with a cool blast button. Although it wasn't the quietest of the dryers I tried it was frantastic for my hair smoothing the cuitical for a salon-style finish.   >>>Check out reviews, ratings, and pricing for the BaBylissPRO Nano Titanium Dryer here

BIO IONIC Whisper Light Pro-Dryer

At just over two pounds dryer is ultra-light and extremely quiet. The manufacturer touts “Exclusive NanoIonic Hybrid Mineral Technology, emits Natural Negative Ions and Far Infrared Energy which hydrates and seals the cuticle for super-fast drying & conditioning.” I like that there are three different settings but mostly that it is a professional grade hair dryer that does the job quickly and quietly. I can listen to the radio while drying and it doesn't scare either the dog or the cat. >>>Check out reviews, ratings, and pricing for the BIO IONIC Whisper Light Pro-Dryer here.

Professional Ionic Hair Dryer Handcrafted in France

Although this wasn't the quietest this was by far my favorite hair dryer. I loved the ability to turn the ionic feature on and off. I struggle to get body so there are times when I'll choose it over extra smooth straight hair. It has good power but not too much with two speed settings and two heat settings. I love it. This is not the quietest hair dryer so I probably won't use it on my kids but might make exceptions for myself. >>>Check out reviews, ratings, and pricing for the Professional Ionic Hair Dryer Handcrafted in France

Berta 1875W Negative Ion Hair Blow Dryer

The Berta is a solid contender in my quest. It was easily one of the most powerful so with my fine hair, I was happy that there were different speed settings along with the three heat settings. I could carry on conversations with my daughter while we dried her hair. I even had a phone call with a friend. I passed it along to a friend with thicker hair. She loves it.  >>>Check out reviews, ratings, and pricing for the Berta 1875W Negative Ion Hair Blow Dryer here.

Remington D3190A Damage Control Ceramic Hair Dryer

This was my bargain quiet hair dryer option. It was decent in terms of quiet. Had several heat settings, none of which were too hot. It also had two speed settings. It was light in my hands and small. While its not a travel hair dryer per se I've kept it to bring on trips. I find my travel hair dryers are the shrillest of the shrill. Many professional hair dryers are either too bulky or way too heavy to take. This wasn't the best of the best but it was definitely a deal. >>>Check out reviews, ratings, and pricing for the Remington D3190A Damage Control Ceramic Hair Dryer here

Dyson Supersonic Hair Dryer

Lastly, I checked out the Dyson Hairdryer. From what I read its unique design and function would make it quiet. It certainly looks cool! Bizarrely cool. I love my Dyson vacuum and its still going strong ten years later. But the Dyson Hairdryer reviews I looked at made it seem like it is made for people who need a really strong hairdryer. And WOW, the price!! Yikes. I couldn't pull the trigger. That said, they make really great stuff so if its ever offered at a great discount I'll get it and update my thoughts here. If you've tried it please let me know in the comments!

Another option you may want to consider is a standing hair dryer. With more room to insulate the motor and larger distance between the motor and your ear the noise you'll hear is rushing air not the whine of the motor.
